Dr Julian Potter

Helping technology leaders turn innovation into scalable, defensible and enforceable IP portfolios that support growth, investment, and long-term enterprise value.

Our Vision

We aim to deliver on-call, fractional in-house IP solutions that are turnkey, strategic, and delivered to scale. We are focussing on scale-up to SME companies who are looking for senior or executive-level support that moves at the pace they need. We are also happy to offer services to larger organisations. We will act as in-house counsel, not just “gun for hire” and recognise the importance of understanding a client’s business to exceed expectations and deliver real impact to help them drive their business forward.

Experience

I am an experienced Patent and Design Attorney, Patent litigator and advocate, and Unified Patent Court representative. My practice encompasses all physics, electronics and software based disciplines, in particular: telecommunications; semiconductors; optics; control systems; software; cryptography; medical devices; nuclear physics, imaging; natural language processing and oil services technology. I have wide experience of drafting and prosecuting patent applications for both the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office, and also for patent offices throughout the world.

I have also represented clients in contentious matters such as oppositions and appeals before the Patent Offices and the UK Courts, including the Court of Appeal; and in advisory work including infringement and validity opinions, freedom to operate opinions, due diligence investigations, IP strategy, and product clearances.

My contentious experience is enhanced by my holding Higher Courts Patent Litigation and Advocacy Certificates entitling me to conduct patent litigation and advocacy in the English courts, including the higher courts up to and including The Supreme Court. I have represented clients in the Court of Appeal,  Patents Court, and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court in litigation covering a wide range of technologies: Irdeto v Telewest (crypto key exchange architecture); Halliburton v Smith (software patents); GPS Industries v Prolink (GPS tech); Kuka & Thompson Friction Welding v Michael Dorsett & Magna International Inc (automotive panels); Innovia Films Ltd v Fritolay North America, Inc. (confidential information and patent entitlement in degradeable packaging) and Vernacare v Moulded Fibre Products (clinical moulded fibre products).  I have also represented clients in many pre-litigation matters successfully avoiding bringing proceedings by achieving satisfactory settlement by negotiation.

My experience in litigation and other contentious proceedings informs and enhances my insights into IP portfolio creation and monetisation, and provides a sound foundation for strategic development of IP portfolios.

Additionally, while an in-house patent manager for an international telecommunications business I gained wide experience of the commercial and strategic value of intellectual property on a global scale informing my advice to clients on the development, exploitation and enforcement of a global intellectual property portfolio.
